The Basics of Sympathy
Where do you begin?
Grief is difficult.
Offering support doesn't have to be.
But sometimes we need some support on being supportive.
So where do you begin? What to say when someone is grieving can be tricky, but with these tips, hopefully you can show yourself to be the helpful, thoughtful person you are.
It's safe to start with "I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry for your loss" may seem like what everyone says, but there's a reason for that: It's true. You are sorry, and it is a loss. At a time like this, speaking from the heart is more important than standing out from the crowd. This is a good place to start as soon as you hear the news. After that...what you say, write, send and do will depend on the situation and relationship.
