I love giving and receiving postcards. There’s something about getting a small note from a friend or family member who is traveling in a different location that is so thoughtful! I love seeing a beautiful image on the front of the postcard so I can feel like I’m on vacation too. Thanks to the Love Letter Squad, I recently discovered that there’s an actual art to postcard writing (see their full tips here). Within such a confined space and having so much to say, it can be very difficult to get the proper message across. They suggest focusing on the recipient in small ways by saying what you miss about them, why and for what part you wish they were traveling with you, and what has reminded you of the person and prompted the postcard writing. By doing this, the recipient gets the feeling that the card is really dedicated to them, while still getting a glimpse of your travels. This makes a postcard that will be tucked away and treasured forever. Everyone wants to read about how loved they are, so why not add a little love in the next postcard you write?

Cardstore.com recently joined forces with Janet Gallin and Tresa Eyres, the communication experts and radio hosts behind San Francisco’s Love Letter Squad, for the prefect prelude to Valentine’s Day: a Love Letter Workshop. Looking for a last minute gift to warm the heart of your Valentine? Love letters are inexpensive and incredibly meaningful, that is — if done correctly. The Love Letter Squad explains that good love letters say ‘hello,’ while great love letters change lives. Here are some tips on how to write a great love letter:
-
A great love letter is a combination of passion and planning. Unlike a quick e-mail or text message, this is a gift that should be well-considered. Start with an outline of what you want to say.
-
You don’t have to be an amazing writer to make an impression. As long as the sentiment is from you, your reader will value its truths.
-
A love letter doesn’t have to be romantic. When is the last time you wrote to your parents, children, or faraway friends? Kids especially love receiving things for them in the mail.
-
Avoid cliches. Try to use rich details specific to that person. Having trouble? Brainstorm ’3 things I love about you,’ or ‘one of my favorite memories of you’.
A love letter is special for the recipient, for one, because they get to see themselves through the eyes of someone who loves them. It may take a little more effort than buying chocolate or flowers, but it’ll last forever, and probably mean a whole lot more. Good luck, and Happy Valentine’s Day!

The Art of Letter Writing

The Love Letter Squad put on a fantastic Love Letter Writing workshop last night at Cardstore.com. From helping people approach hard to write letters to giving tips on thoughtful thank you notes, everyone went away with helpful hints and inspiration for our own letter writing.
One of my favorite lessons was that a love letter is a gift and the stationery is the wrapping paper. The Love Letter Squad emphasized how important it is to consider design, paper, the envelope and the stamp.
One of my favorite tips of the evening was how to write a thank you for a gift you don’t like. Instead of embellishing and saying you truly love it when you really do not, they suggested you emphasize the thoughtfulness of the giver to have given you a gift in the first place. Another idea is to mention that every time you see said gift, you’ll think of the giver.
But probably the most important thing that came out of the workshop was that to write a truly meaningful love letter, you must dedicate uninterrupted time to the task. And it’s well worth the investment, for according to the Love Letter Squad, “A good love letter says hello, but a great love letter changes lives.”
