Stationery Show Highlights

I’ve gone to a lot of trade shows over the years, but the National Stationery Show (NSS) is my favorite. What makes this show special are the stationery artists themselves. It is a kick to experience their creativity, and as a group, stationery folk are the nicest people you will ever meet. And… you can’t beat the location in NYC! Great food, Central Park, and half-price Broadway shows like American Idiot and In the Heights. Ah, that’s the way to travel.

What were the Show Highlights for me this year?

  • First, the mood at the show was noticeably more upbeat. Although the show floor seems smaller than in years past, it held strong at 900 exhibitors and 11,000 attendees. Most artists said sales to retailers were going very well.
  • Second, letterpress artists continue to impress with their compelling alternatives to mass-market greeting cards. There are 100s of amazing artists, with my favorite new greeting card lines coming from Hammerpress, Hello!Lucky, and Delphine Press, (check out the blog reviews and photos of these new lines at PoppyTalk and Oh So Beautiful Paper)
  • Third, it is refreshing to see modern humor cards that are witty yet not mean-spirited. Every year it seems more “shock-value” cards hit the market, nevertheless, it is awesome to see design and sweet humor still expertly played. My favorite in this genre is Old Tom Foolery, and their new Headlines Collection of newspaper-style greeting cards

    National Stationery Show 2010

The Cardstore.com team just returned from a whirlwind week at the 2010 National Stationery Show, where we visited our many artists exhibiting at the show, scoured the aisles for the newest card trends and trendsetters,  and threw a pretty hoppin’ dinner party if we do say so ourselves.

    ‘This is Home’ Project

I just stumbled across this wonderful DIY contest–the ‘This is Home’ Project. Contestants were to visually explore the concept of the ‘home’ for a chance of receiving their design on limited edition postcards. The projects were decorated with everything from Russian nesting dolls to sailboats, each with unique messages about what the home means to them.

And to my surprise, I saw one of the Cardstore.com artists featured on the blog…none other than Tori Higa! Check out her interpretation of what the home means (pictured above) and see some of the other amazing entries below.

    Cardstore.com in Boho Magazine

We’re thrilled that a few of Cardstore.com’s Apiary Design holiday cards were featured in the winter issue of Boho Magazine.  The new magazine has quickly become one of our favorites, as they focus on two of our favorite things, style and sustainability!  Not to mention, they have impeccable taste in greeting cards (but we might be a bit biased on that last point).

A Special Card to Honor a Special Life

kate spain 2; A Special Card to Honor a Special Life

Cardstore.com is pleased to feature Artist Guest Blogger Kate Spain.  To see Kate’s collection of Holiday Cards and Greeting Cards, click here.

One day this August, I received an e-mail from a woman named Deloris in Mississippi through Cardstore’s site, which links to featured artists’ websites.

In her note to me, Deloris explained that her community of Greenville, Mississippi, had lost a great friend and leader this year, Malcolm Carl Walls, Sr. She and her friends were planning a memorial service in Malcom’s honor coinciding with the annual Mississippi Delta Blues and Heritage Festival that Malcolm had helped start and build into a world-famous annual event.

They needed a special card to send out for the event and asked me if I would design it.

It’s not every day that I get to connect with a consumer on such a personal level. I’m so glad that Deloris and I did. But it wouldn’t have happened without Cardstore. Everyone there, from CEO Marty Reed to Katy in Design to Tiffany in Marketing, really made it work.

Cardstore CEO and Chairman Marty Reed shared his thoughts on Deloris’ special request:

“We were inspired by Deloris and her friends’ efforts and by Malcolm’s work in raising the Mississippi Delta Blues Festival. Like Kate Spain, we wanted to pitch in. So Kate created a great custom design, and we produced it on the finest quality cards and had them delivered to Deloris’ door.”

Deloris shared with me and Cardstore that Malcolm Carl Walls, Sr., was an inspiring leader in MACE (Mississippi Action for Community Education, Inc.) over the past 3 decades involved in empowering poor and disadvantaged citizens within its service area by developing their individual and collective capacities to effect social and economic change and improvements within their lives and communities.

One of the more renowned projects that Malcolm took from vision to fruition was the regional blues festival, which has now become the world-famous Mississippi Delta Blues and Heritage Festival. Starting out as the producer and director of the event, Malcolm grew it into what it is today by building on the strengths of everyone in the region and bridging the region with the greater blues community. Thirty years since its first trial run under the guidance of Malcolm, the festival is recognized as one of the top arts and tourism events in the southeastern United States, attracting more than 10,000 attendees and participants annually.

Cardstore and I were very happy to help Deloris and her community get the right card to celebrate and honor this inspiring man.
