Teachers Appreciation Week is May 6th – 10th!

Did you know that Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6th – May 10th and Teacher Appreciation Day is May 7th? It’s the perfect chance to thank those special educators in your life, or in the life of your children, for all that they do. During this week, and especially on May 7th, we can take this opportunity to thank the educators for the important role teachers play in making sure every student receives a quality education.

One person here at Cardstore who takes special pride in thanking her sons’ educators is our Senior Product Manager, Elizabeth. She is the person around here responsible for managing our awesome card selection to ensure we have the best holiday and everyday cards to meet the needs of every Cardstore user. She also makes the most creative teacher thank you gifts, so we asked her to share with us her inspiration (and favorite Cardstore card for the holiday!).

Cardstore: Why do you take time to create a special card and gift?

Elizabeth: As a fulltime working mom, I am entrusting that my 4 year old twin boys are in the best care, not only learning about letters, shapes, and numbers, but also that they feel safe and appreciated.  This is a huge responsibility for their teachers and I respect and appreciate all the hard work and attention they give to not only my boys, but all the class mates.  By giving them a personalized card and gift, I feel like I am showing them how much I appreciate them.

Cardstore: How do you pick the perfect card?  CS_SC_BLG_04232013_SHELF_half

Elizabeth: I have little guys, so I try to find a card that looks more juvenile, but also touches on the fact that these teachers are not only teaching them, but taking care of them.  For example, the card I selected had this copy: “You get an A+, Teacher, for the helpful things you do, For your kindness and your patience, and just for being you! Happy Teacher Appreciation Day”  It speaks to so much more than just “teaching”.

Cardstore: What message do you write in the card?

Elizabeth: Well, the boys are now able to write their full names, so I ship the cards home so that my boys can personally write their own names in the card.  I also make sure to include a recent photo of the boys as well.

We’re certain that those lucky teachers will feel very appreciated after they receive their thoughtful gifts from Elizabeth! If you’re like us, you’re probably feeling motivated to create an awesome gift to give to the educators in your life. The Story Behind the Card: Monster Truck Mama Mother’s Day Card

With Mother’s Day quickly approaching, it can be really easy to pick out a generic Mother’s Day card that thanks mom for all she has done for you through the years. While that’s sweet and certainly genuine, giving mom one of those cards can sometimes seem to be lacking a personal element that shows off what an incredibly unique and amazing mom she has really been. That’s where this week’s Story Behind the Card comes in: how to celebrate Mother’s Day by showing Mom you know what makes her really special and different from every other Mom.

CS_SC_BLG_04102013_SHELF_featTwo of Cardstore’s designers, Becca and Elizabeth, were looking to create a Mother’s Day card that could be personalized with a statement that shows what makes an individual mom stand out, so they came up with a card featuring a fabulous Monster Truck Mama. The card was originally going to call out Mom’s skills in the kitchen, but Becca and Elizabeth quickly realized the card was forgetting about all the non-conventional, extraordinary moms who brighten their children’s lives with their one-of-a-kind interests and passions. Inspired by Elizabeth’s own love of monster trucks, this card became a celebration of all the moms who don’t necessarily fit in the conventional mom box.

This Mother’s Day, why not take a similar cue and personalize a card that shows you love Mom for just being who she is, and for inspiring you to be yourself too. Whether you’re celebrating her passion for running half-marathons, obsession with Jane Austen novels, or even her love of monster trucks, it’s a cute way to emphasize what a unique role she plays in your life. What makes your mom really stand out?

  • Plan the menu! Bring out some classic Mexican food for the occasion by making sure there are plenty of tortilla chips, guacamole, and salsa (both spicy and mild!), as well as a buffet-style taco bar.  No Cinco de Mayo party could be complete without the addition of a great Margarita, so find a favorite recipe and perfect it before your guests arrive. Don’t forget to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth too with some adorable ideas like treat-filled pinata cookies or these ridiculously cute and detailed Cinco de Mayo cookies.
  • As a finishing touch, plan out your decor. Using your invitation as inspiration, incorporate plenty of bright colors into your decorations. Piñatas can take center stage for this holiday, so why not make some of your own mini piñatas? They would not only make a great decoration, but could be sweet party favors for any little ones you’re hosting. Decorating the taco bar or margarita station with fringed paper done in the colors of your invites also gives the party an authentic and fun-filled feel. As a finishing touch, create your own Cinco de Mayo playlist or take this favorite playlist as inspiration.

The Story Behind the Card: Long Distance Mother’s Day Cards

Cardstore’s peek into the story behind the card this week comes from our designer Emily, and her experiences with spending Mother’s Day away from her mom who lives in Houston. Having moved away from her family, Emily really wanted a card that expressed how far she sends her love to her mom every year, no matter the distance or where she’s living. With this as inspiration, Emily created the Mother’s Day card entitled A Mother’s Day Wish From Here to There that celebrates how she’s sending her love from San Francisco all the way to Houston.

As kids grow up and move away, spending Mother’s Day away from home has become almost second nature to many daughters and sons. Thanks to Emily’s very personal Mother’s Day card design, Cardstore now has other long distance Mother’s Day cards that show how no matter the distance, you’ll always be there to send her your love and appreciation. How far away will you be from mom this Mother’s Day, and how do you plan on letting her know you’re thinking of her no matter the miles?

The Story Behind the Card: Mommy’s Little Angel Mother’s Day Card

How did our Mommy’s Little Angel Mother’s Day card become the comic gem that it is? Read the story behind the card:

Originally, this Mother’s Day card featured a picture of a decidedly angelic little girl. But, our team wondered, how much funnier would it be–and memorable–if it featured a picture of your child instead? From there, it became clear that this Mother’s Day card had some real comic potential. By selecting a picture that focused on a less-than-angelic child, we added a bit of ironic fun to this Mother’s Day photo card to ensure that mom gets a laugh and some love this Mother’s Day.

Our Mommy’s Little Angel Mother’s Day card isn’t the only Mother’s Day design to which that you could add a funny photo. Check out these two designs–one that features a child talking on the phone to the president, and another that sends a message from the good child–and consider adding your own inspired photo to send a funny Mother’s Day card she won’t forget!

Count Your Blessings – Religious Mother’s Day Cards

Every family has their own special Mother’s Day traditions, whether it’s breakfast in bed, a spa day for the lady of the house, or taking over laundry duties for the day, but it seems that many involve a morning at church. Mother’s Day is the day of the year with the highest church attendance behind Easter and Christmas, suggesting many moms love a quiet morning at church with their family members. Cardstore has been inspired by this statistic to create plenty of new religious Mother’s Day cards for this year’s celebration that fit in perfectly for mom’s desire for a sweet and sincere day.

The Story Behind the Card: Baby Mama Mother’s Day Card

Have you seen our Baby Mama Mother’s Day card?  Here’s the scoop on how it was created:

One of our designers, Lori Donaldson, was tired of all the Mother’s Day cards that specifically linked being a mom with being a wife. After all, there are plenty of ways to be a mom, without being a wife–many of us are raised by single moms, or moms that are unmarried to their partners. To protest all the Mother’s Day cards that specifically call out “wife,” she created this beautiful floral design that celebrates motherhood alone.

Cardstore has a number of other nontraditional Mother’s Day cards that celebrate single moms, or simply address themselves to a mom instead of a wife. We have many times to celebrate the romantic relationships in our life–anniversaries and Valentines Day–but only one day to celebrate mom! Mother’s Day is for celebrating moms of all types, for all they do.
