{meet & greet} Emily, Designer

Meet the Cardstore Team | Emily, Designer

Tell us 5 quick things about yourself.
I’m a newlywed, animal lover, artist/designer, fitness enthusiast, and a sort-of-baker.

What do you do at Cardstore?
I’m a line designer which means I’m responsible for creating the cards. We all wear a lot of hats on our creative team though, so we do a lot more than what our job titles are! We participate in lots of brainstorms, other projects within the company, and even some production work.

What do you do outside of work?
Outside of work I try to keep it low key, but that rarely works out. I like to cook as much as I can, but my heart is definitely in baking. I like to run and stay active, and basically do anything I can outside! And usually at some point during the evening/weekends, I can be found at my computer doing work of one form or another. My favorite part of the day though, is relaxing with my husband! I spend most of my time with him, at least when he’s not studying up for his doctorate in physical therapy.

How new of a newlywed are you? Being a designer, did you do the decorations yourself?
I got married in August of 2012, and we just celebrated our 1 year anniversary. I’ve never been happier and my husband has been the biggest blessing in my life! I planned my wedding down to the inch and yes, I did most all of the ceremony and reception décor myself! It was a challenge, for sure (especially because my family lives out of state), but ever since then, I’ve been in love with everything “weddings.” …and I do mean EVERYTHING.

You say you’re an animal lover, does that mean you have pets?
I LOVE animals and truly have a big heart for them. And yes, I have a cat named Daisy-Duke. She’s hilarious and “talks” more than most of my friends. She’s my personal assistant when I’m home and thinks that sitting on my lap while I’m working is helpful. I grew up with a German Shepherd Husky mix and my parents have two totally awesome Siberian Huskies (Ivann and Nacho). With more than 2,000 miles between us, I miss those huskies a lot (and my parents too, of course)!

What does fitness enthusiast mean?
It means I try to stay physically fit. I hit the gym in the crappier winter months and bike, run, and walk outside in the nicer summer months. I’m a runner at heart though, so my favorite thing to do to stay active is to get outside and run. At the moment I’m training for my first half marathon, which I’m really excited about because it’s something I’ve always wanted to do! I think doing pretty much anything outdoors would make me happy. Except maybe ice fishing… I think I would hate that!

Ivann and I / Red Velvet Cheesecake Cookies / My best friend Kate and I being silly at my wedding

Have you always known you wanted to be a designer?
No, but I did always know I wanted to do something with art. I come from a very long line of artists and musicians. I went to school for graphic design and drawing, but didn’t discover my love for greeting cards and invitations until my friends started asking me to design their wedding invitations and baby announcements! I still try to draw and paint as much as possible too – I bring my sketchbook with me to a lot of places.

Anything else we should know about you?
Hmmm… I like to make cheesecakes! That has to be my favorite thing to bake. In 2012 I was the Cardstore bake-off champion! I made Red Velvet Cheesecake cookies with an Oreo bottom and white chocolate drizzle. They were super-yummy. I love to bake, but I usually only do it for other people, otherwise (insert guilty face here) I end up eating it all because my husband doesn’t eat sweets.

I’m originally from Buffalo, NY, where we love the Bills, the Sabres and wings! Besides college and a year I spent in Nashville, TN, I lived there for most of my life. I’ve been in Cleveland since 2011, and have to say that the last few years have been some of the happiest in my life! It was a lot harder than I expected to move to a new city, though – I miss my family and close friends a lot. I still consider myself a “transplant” in Cleveland, but I’ve spent a lot of time trying to get to know it, and have found some really great places that you wouldn’t find on a tourist map.
