Back-to-school paper chain – a summer craft for kids

Make the most of your summer AND celebrate back to school! This paper chain filled with fun activities makes a great summer craft for kids!

Summer is more than halfway over, and that means school is just around the corner.

I know it’s not something a lot of kids look forward to, but my oldest daughter is starting kindergarten this fall, so it’s extra exciting for our family this year!

In celebration, and to help pass the days before school begins, we came up with a list of activities to do before the summer is over and made a fun jar with the activities listed on colored paper strips. Every time we do an activity, we add the link to a paper chain.

It’s so exciting for all of us to see the chain getting longer as school gets closer!

I love this project because it’s easy and colorful, and once school starts, we’ll have a fun decoration to hang for first-day-of-school breakfast!

You’ll need:

  • Colored paper
  • Scissors
  • Pen or marker
  • Tape or stapler

Cut out strips of paper for each day left of summer.

Write down your activities (if you need some ideas, I’ve shared thirty of them at the bottom of this post). You can color code them, if you like, with some colors being low-key and quick activities, and other colors being better for weekends or days when you have more time.

Every day, choose a strip from the jar, do the activity, and add a link to your chain!
